Plane Flight (Hertfordshire)
In
Brief
"Absolutely Brilliant. An excellent experience in every way."
Review
The
experience began at Elstree - a small aerodrome, a short drive from
the M1.
The
venue comprises a single airstrip, series of hangers and a reception
building. Upon arrival we signed in at reception and awaited our
instructor for the day. After a short wait our instructor arrived
and led us into a small pre-flight training room. Once inside, we
were introduced to the principles of flying a fixed wing aircraft. A
small model was used to illustrate how to perform the basic
maneuvers. We were also guided through the various instruments and
cockpit components. The pre-flight session lasted about 15 minutes
and was conducted extremely well. The instructions were clear and
easy to understand. We were also impressed by the instructors
friendliness and the great sense of humour.
We then made our way to the aircraft, which in this instance was a
Piper PA28 - converted to diesel for quieter and more economic
flying. Our instructor began by talking us through how to enter the
aircraft. We then climbed in and performed a cockpit drill, which
included checking the electronic and mechanical components were
operating correctly.
It
was then time to put on our head-sets, start the engine and begin
taxiing. We were encouraged to keep our hands on the controls at all
times, to better understand what the instructor was doing and
"get a feel for it", but we wisely left it to the
instructor to take off and land! Soon
after take-off we were given the controls, and we headed for better
weather, ah, the feeling of flying!
It's
surprisingly tricky to keep the aircraft at level flight, not
changing altitude, and not to go in the wrong direction! The control
sticks only require minute pressure to change the attitude of the
aircraft.
After
flying the aircraft for around 20 minutes, our instructor
demonstrated some of the other maneuvers the plane could do… That
included, among other things, wing-over-wing - or in layman's terms
- flying on the side. The g-force felt like a lot more than it
actually was, and looking to one side seeing the ground and having
clear blue sky on the other really was something!
There
are few experiences that offer such a full range of features. Our
instructor was excellent, and instilled in us the belief that we
could really fly.
Excellent
people-skills, excellent communication and freedom to test the
aircraft made this one of the better experiences we've had the joy
to review!
