Sky Diving
(Nottinghamshire)
In
Brief "Possibly
the most exhilarating experience known to man."
Review
The
experience began long before arriving at Langar Airfield - 12 miles
South East of Nottingham, on the border
of Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. Langar Airfield is the
busiest civilian drop zone in the country, located in the heart of
England. Knowing
you're about to throw yourself out of an aircraft is a rather
adrenalin-inducing thing!... Not helped by the fact that you don't
actually throw yourself out, your legs are gently eased out of the
aircraft and the only thing keeping you inside is the person
you're strapped to - a person only too eager to get you both out of
there!
We
were greeted by our instructor Ian "Milko" Hodgkinson, and
were soon at ease. The professional attitude and
friendly, humourous approach can settle even the most twitchy
nerves. We began with a brief registration and then a full
demonstration of the equipment, interspersed with a few humourous
warnings about what not to do and what to feel free to do.
After careful instruction, we were given our "suit"
complete with hat, and we were off!
During
the experience 'British Parachute Schools' provided a professional
cameraman to follow us around, taking both video and stills for our
DVD and prints of the day.
As
we left the airfield and headed to a sufficient altitude, the sense
of anticipation grew rapidly. We were not alone, as a number
of other jumpers were on board for a combination of tandem and solo
jumps. Finally we reached a sufficient altitude and it was
time to leave the plane! We
were last to jump, which could be considered a good and
bad thing! On a plus, it delays the inevitable, but on the
flip side, it meant we could view the other members of the group
vanishing out of the plane! It's
difficult to describe the final moments of sitting inside the plane
and equally difficult to outline the excitement of accelerating to
terminal velocity! Suffice to say it's everything you would
imagine and more!
After
the initial freefall the parachute was deployed and we began the
glide down to earth at a much more leisurely pace. The landing,
we should mention, was so soft and easy it defied
logic.
The lay-out of the day was meticulously planned and
streamlined. We were carefully introduced to the experience.
The confidence of the highly skilled instructor made us feel safe
and in experienced hands.
After a few days came proof in the post in the form of a DVD and
photos. The end result of which was outstanding!
Adventure
Experiences highly recommends British Parachute Schools. The
operation is top-class and geared for jumpers of all levels of
experience.
